The Peace Poster District Final was conducted in a different format this year. Usually, the posters are displayed at the District Convention with Lions casting their votes. This year, the district final was an event in its own right which proved to be a big success.
On Saturday November 7th, Lions, partners, students and families joined together in Gillingham Hall at Annesley Junior School. Lion Andrew Stacey hosted the event and was joined by Peace Poster Co-coordinator Lion Julie Pickles (unfortunately co-coordinator Lion Helen Martin was unable to attend) and four fabulous judges including Gill Hicks OAM, Caroline Wall, Kelly Rasheed and Assistant Police Commissioner Ian Parrott.
The event was also live streamed on Facebook (thank you Lion Peter Korndorfer) and continues to be viewed online. Lion Andrew interviewed the judges, the students and members of the audience to get their thoughts on the artwork and everyone was impressed with the high standard of artwork and the interpretations of ‘Peace Through Service”.
It was a great way to showcase the peace poster program, the entries and have the students and schools involved. We have since had a couple of schools and clubs already make contact about increasing their involvement or jumping on board for the first-time next year as they’ve now seen, and have a better understanding, of what the program is all about.
We are glad we weren’t judging because it was certainly a difficult task for the judges. Honourable Mention Awards were awarded to Cleo Tsimiklis from St George’s College (sponsored by Adelaide Hellenic Lions Club) and Natalie Findlay from Burton Primary School (sponsored by Paralowie Lions Club). The District Winner was Jack Dale from Minlaton District School (sponsored by Minlaton & Districts Lions Club) and his poster will now proceed to the national final.
