From Our District Governor
Welcome to our Lions Clubs International 201 C1 District website, and thank you for visiting. I am Alex Coates, the current District Governor for this remarkable District we call 201 C1.
As you’ll discover, our clubs across South Australia are serving their communities with passion, pride and care. If there is a need, there truly is a Lion helping the community across our global causes and initiatives including childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, environment, hunger, humanitarian efforts, vision, youth, and mental health and wellbeing.
We have numerous foundations which help us as Lions do more for our communities and those in need. From assistance dogs to childhood cancer research, children’s mobility devices, Lions eye health program, diabetes and so many more.
Enjoy your journey of discovery about Lions as you have a look through this website, I hope you feel inspired by what you see and that it will develop an appetite to help your community and those in need. Don’t hesitate to contact your local club, you’ll find one near you on this website, to see how you can help our Lions and your community by joining our pride.
Yours in Service Always,
DG Alex Coates

About DG Alex
Alex Coates’ Lions journey began when he was invited to help establish a branch club in Mawson Lakes. This decision ten years ago was the continuation of a lifetime of service that started when he joined the Scouts in the early 1990’s.
Since then, service has been a constant thread through his life including 17 years with St John Ambulance, nearly 20 years on various School Governing Councils and service with at least 15 other organisations. Alex has 18 years service as a Justice of the Peace.
In Lions, Alex has made a contribution to the Gilles Plains, Mawson Lakes, Salisbury and Elizabeth Playford clubs and is proud to currently be a member of the Adelaide Filipino Lions, where he remains an active and valued member.
Alex has held numerous leadership roles at both club and district levels, always bringing energy, experience, and a deep commitment to the community. His ability to advocate for change, drive service and spread kindness and his positive attitude has earned him respect and support throughout District 201C1 and beyond.
Outside of Lions, Alex has worked for the State Government for 20 years assisting those in need, providing advice and leadership. Alex is also a Training Manager with Northern Volunteering SA Inc and has done it all from delivering the Messenger to being a red coat at Football Park.
Alex is a passionate advocate for LGBTIQAP+ rights, Mental Health and Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention. He serves as Chair of Northern Volunteering SA Inc and Every Life Matters – Salisbury Suicide Prevention Network and been part of the Lake Windemere B-6 School Governing Council for 15 years.
Alex served as a Councillor with the City of Salisbury from 2006 to 2014 including as Deputy Mayor and Chair of the CEO recruitment panel. Alex brings a number of qualifications to Lions including a Bachelor of International Studies and a Master of Business Administration.
Alex has not just served as a leader but has been on the ground at Clean-up Australia Day and Fred’s Van, as a First Responder at bushfires and assisting those considering suicide.
Alex’s leadership in both Lions and far beyond reflects a passion for service, innovation, and making a lasting difference. As District Governor for 2026-27, he brings a wealth of knowledge, an international perspective, and a genuine desire to empower clubs across the district.
