Past International Director Tony Benbow OAM 

Tony has been a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs for over 36 years, commencing as a Charter Member of the Lions Club of South Vermont in District V5 where he is still a member today.

Tony has had a very distinguished service in Lions at Club, District, Multiple District and the International levels.

Over his career in Lions, he has been the District Governor of District V1, Council Chairperson of Lions Australia and held several positions in the Global Action Team including the head of the team for our Constitutional Area. As well as these roles he was the Vice Chair for the Host Committee for the International Convention in Sydney in 2010 and now is the Host Chair for the International Lions Convention being held in Melbourne in 2024. In 2016, Tony was elected the International Director for Constitutional Area 7 which covers Australia, New Zealand and Islands of the South Pacific, Indonesia and New Caledonia. He completed this role in 2018.

Since that time Tony continues to serve and holds a number of positions in other organisations which include, Chairman of the Lions House Foundation Inc., Chairman and Victorian State Director for the Australian Lions Foundation Ltd. and recently retired as Chairman of StepAhead Australia Ltd after 9 years as Chair. He is currently the Chair of the Multiple District Long Range Development Committee.

Tony’s wife Sue, is also a Lion as well as an active member of the Lions Club of South Vermont Ladies Auxiliary. They have two adult children one who is married and they have a 15 month old daughter (their first grandchild).


Past Council Chairperson Phillip Johnson

Phillip has been a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs for 34 years in serval clubs.  He is currently a member of Colac Lions Club (V2).

During his career in Lions Phillip has been District Governor in 2014/15 and Council Chairperson in 2015/1 and is currently MD201 GLT Leadership Coordinator, Zone Chairperson and Club President.

He has also been involved in many Lions Institutes namely Faculty Development Institute (2012), Advanced Lions Leadership Institute (2012), Faculty Excellence Series (2016), Guiding Lion (2018) and Lions Certified Instructor (2019).  Faculty member for RLLI, FDI and ALLI X 2.

Phillip has been honoured with many awards, both Lions and Civic, including a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship, James D Richardson Honour Award, President’s Appreciation Award, Key Membership Award to name a few.

During his professional life, Phillip was a teacher for 40 years, spending his last e24 years in that profession as a Primary School Principal.

Phillip’s sporting interests include going for a daily walk with his wife Anne, and watching AFL football, especially the Sydney Swans.  Phillip and Anne have 3 children and 4 grandsons.
